How it works
How South African income tax is calculated
Contributions to a pension, provident fund or retirement annuity are deductible up to 27.5% of your income, capped at R430,000 a year. They come off your income before tax is worked out.
Taxable income is then taxed using the 2026/27 brackets, from 18% up to 45% on income above R1,878,600. Everyone gets a primary rebate of R17,820; people aged 65 and over get a further R9,765, and those 75 and over another R3,249.
UIF is charged at 1% of pay, capped at R177.12 a month. Below the tax threshold (R99,000 for under-65s), you pay no income tax at all.
