How it works
How PAYE is calculated in Ghana
Your employer first deducts your SSNIT contribution of 5.5% of salary. Mandatory SSNIT contributions are tax-free, so they reduce your chargeable income. Voluntary Tier 3 pension contributions are also tax-free up to 16.5% of salary.
The rest is taxed using the graduated rates introduced by the Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2026: nil on the first GH¢7,056 a year (GH¢588 a month), then 5%, 10%, 17.5%, 25% and 30%, with 35% on income above GH¢600,000 a year (GH¢50,000 a month).
SSNIT is strictly calculated on basic salary. For simplicity we apply it to the salary you enter, so if part of your pay is allowances your payslip may differ slightly.

FAQ
Common questions
What are the new PAYE rates in Ghana?
From 1 September 2026, resident individuals pay nil on the first GH¢588 of monthly chargeable income, 5% on the next GH¢80, 10% on the next GH¢100, 17.5% on the next GH¢2,900, 25% on the next GH¢16,000, 30% on the next GH¢30,332 and 35% on anything above GH¢50,000.
How much is the tax-free threshold in Ghana?
The first GH¢7,056 of annual chargeable income (GH¢588 a month) is tax-free for resident individuals, up from GH¢5,880 before the 2026 amendment.
Is SSNIT deducted before tax?
Yes. The employee's 5.5% SSNIT contribution is tax-deductible, so PAYE is calculated on your salary after SSNIT. The employer pays a further 13% on top of your salary.
How are non-residents taxed in Ghana?
Non-resident individuals are generally taxed at a flat rate of 25% on their Ghana-source income. This calculator is for resident employees.
