How it works
The maths behind adding and removing VAT
Adding VAT: gross = net × (1 + rate). At 20%, a £250 invoice becomes £300, of which £50 is VAT.
Removing VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). At 20%, a £300 receipt contains £50 of VAT. A common mistake is taking 20% off the gross price, which would wrongly give £60.
The VAT fraction is a handy shortcut: at 20% the VAT inside a gross price is always 1/6; at 15% it's 3/23; at 7.5% it's 3/43.

FAQ
Common questions
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by 1 plus the VAT rate. For UK standard-rate VAT at 20%, multiply by 1.2: £100 becomes £120.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1 plus the VAT rate. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.2: £120 includes £20 of VAT on a £100 net price. Don't simply subtract 20%, which gives the wrong answer.
What is the VAT rate in Nigeria?
The standard VAT rate in Nigeria is 7.5%. Some goods and services, such as basic food items and medical products, are exempt or zero-rated.
What is the VAT rate in Equatorial Guinea?

What are the VAT rates in Kenya and South Africa?
Kenya's standard VAT rate is 16% and South Africa's is 15%.
